Frequently Asked Questions
File RTI online at: 1) RTI Online Portal (rtionline.gov.in) for Central Govt, 2) State RTI portals (search "[State] RTI online"), 3) Pay ₹10 via online payment. You can also file via post or in-person. Our tool generates the application format.
RTI fee is ₹10 for Central Govt and most states. Pay via: Cash (at PIO office), Demand Draft, Indian Postal Order, Online payment. BPL cardholders are EXEMPT from fees. No fee for life/liberty matters under Section 7(5).
PIO must reply within 30 days from application date. For life/liberty matters: 48 hours. If transferred to another department: 30 days from transfer. If reply not received, First Appeal within 30 days of deadline.
RTI can be rejected only under 9 exemptions (security, cabinet, third party, etc). If rejected: 1) File First Appeal to senior officer within 30 days, 2) If appeal rejected, file Second Appeal to Information Commission. Frivolous RTI can attract ₹25,000 penalty.
You can ask: Govt files, records, documents, memos, emails, opinions, data, contracts, tenders, inspection reports. Cannot ask: Cabinet records, security matters, personal information, information under exemptions, court records, third-party trade secrets.
NO! You do not need to give any reason for seeking information under RTI Act 2005. Section 6(2) clearly states citizen need not give reasons. Just state what information you want. PIO cannot ask why you need it.
