Key Snatching is ILLEGAL!

Under the Motor Vehicles Act, traffic police can only seize documents (license, RC, insurance), NOT your vehicle keys. Snatching keys is unauthorized and can constitute harassment.

CRPC
Section 102 CrPC - Police can seize property only during investigation of cognizable offense
IPC
Section 379 IPC / Section 303 BNS - Taking property without consent is theft

Immediate Steps to Take

1
Stay calm and polite - do not argue aggressively
2
Ask for the officer's name, badge number, and designation
3
Record the interaction on your phone (legal in public)
4
State clearly: "Sir/Madam, seizing keys is not permitted under Motor Vehicles Act"
5
If they insist, ask for written acknowledgment of key seizure
6
Note the time, place, and any witnesses

What to Say (Politely)

"Sir/Madam, I respect your authority. However, under Section 206 of the Motor Vehicles Act, you can only seize my documents, not my vehicle keys. Please issue me a challan if required, and I will comply. But snatching my keys is not authorized by law."

Stay calm and respectful. Recording the interaction is legal in public places.
